Planning a bathroom renovation in Hobart? Here's the real process, from first call to final walkthrough, and what to sort out before work begins.

Most people ringing us for the first time have no idea what actually happens between saying “yes, let’s do it” and having a finished bathroom. They’ve seen renovation shows where a whole bathroom gets done in a weekend and figure that’s roughly how it works. It isn’t, and knowing the real sequence upfront is what stops a renovation turning into a stressful few months.

Here’s the process we actually run, start to finish, for a typical Hobart bathroom renovation.

Step 1: The Site Visit and Honest Scope

Before anyone talks numbers, we come and look at the actual bathroom. Photos and measurements sent over the phone only tell you so much, and older Hobart homes especially can hide things a phone call won’t reveal, out-of-square walls, hidden plumbing runs, or a floor that’s not as level as it looks.

This is also where we talk honestly about what’s actually needed versus what’s being sold to you elsewhere. Not every bathroom needs a full layout change to look completely different, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than pad out a quote.

Step 2: Design and Material Selection

Once we know the scope, it’s time to lock in the actual look, tiles, vanity, tapware, shower screen, colours. We’ll show you real samples rather than just photos on a screen, because tile colour in particular can look completely different under your bathroom’s actual lighting compared to a showroom.

This is also the stage to decide on layout. Keeping the existing layout keeps costs down since plumbing stays put. Changing it, moving a toilet, swapping a bath for a walk-in shower, adding a second basin, is entirely doable but adds plumbing labour and sometimes needs council approval depending on what’s moving.

Step 3: Quote, Timeline, and Booking In

You get a written quote that spells out what’s included, not a vague number. A standard bathroom renovation in Hobart typically runs two to three weeks once work starts, longer if the layout’s changing or if we hit something unexpected once walls are open.

Because trades book up, especially plumbers and tilers, there’s usually a lead time between booking in and your start date. We’ll give you a realistic window rather than a start date we know we can’t hit.

Step 4: Demolition and What’s Behind the Walls

Demo day is when we find out if the quote was accurate. In homes built before 1990, this is also when we test for asbestos if it hasn’t already been checked, since Hobart had a lot of asbestos cement sheeting used in wet areas right through to the late 80s. WorkSafe Tasmania has clear guidance on this, and we won’t proceed with wall or floor removal in an at-risk home until it’s been tested.

Once everything’s stripped back, that’s when hidden issues like old corroded pipework or rotten framing from a past leak show up. It’s the one part of the timeline that’s hardest to predict exactly, which is why a sensible contingency in your budget matters. Our budget bathroom renovation guide covers this in more detail.

Step 5: Waterproofing, Plumbing, and Tiling

This is the part of the job nobody sees in the finished photos but it’s the most important stretch of the whole renovation. Waterproofing membrane goes down to meet AS 3740, plumbing is roughed in or relocated, then tiling begins once the waterproofing has cured properly. Rushing this stage is exactly how bathrooms end up with leaks two years down the track.

Step 6: Fit-Off and Final Walkthrough

Vanity, toilet, tapware, showerscreen, mirror, and any electrical fittings go in last. We walk the finished bathroom through with you before calling the job done, checking doors close properly, water drains where it should, and every fitting is sealed and working. If anything’s not right, it gets fixed before we consider the job finished, not after.
